The Japan Association of Defense Industry (JADI) is Japan’s premier industry association for companies and organizations engaged in the manufacturing, repair, and research & development of defense equipment.
With a membership spanning Japan’s leading defense contractors, JADI serves as the central platform connecting the private defense sector with the government, driving innovation, policy engagement, and international cooperation in Japan’s defense industry.
Mission & Purpose
JADI was established to promote the sound development of Japan’s defense equipment industry and contribute to national security. The Association serves as the authoritative voice of the defense industrial base in Japan, pursuing the following objectives:
- Promotion and advancement of the defense equipment industry
- Private sector contribution to national security policy
- Maintenance and improvement of quality standards for defense equipment
- Close collaboration with the Ministry of Defense and the government

Key Services & Activities
■ Research & Studies
JADI conducts in-depth research and analysis on domestic and international technology trends, industrial developments, and policy shifts in the defense equipment sector. Commissioned research from government agencies, including the Ministry of Defense, is also undertaken.
■ Information Collection & Dissemination
The Association gathers comprehensive data and information on defense equipment from sources worldwide and delivers timely intelligence to member companies. This includes the editorial production and distribution of the Monthly JADI journal and other periodicals.
■ R&D Support
JADI provides technical and informational support for the R&D activities of member companies. Services include cutting-edge defense technology briefings, coordination of international technology transfer arrangements, and facilitation of innovation across the industry.
■ Policy Recommendations
The Association formulates and submits policy recommendations to the government and Ministry of Defense on the modernization, performance enhancement, and production base consolidation of defense equipment — ensuring the industrial sector’s perspective is reflected in national policy.
■ Seminars & Training
JADI regularly organizes lectures, training sessions, and seminars on defense equipment topics. These programs address the latest technological developments, policy trends, and shifts in the security environment — developing the human capital essential to Japan’s defense industry.
■ Standards & Specifications
JADI manages standards and specifications related to defense equipment, contributing to quality consistency and continuous improvement. This includes the development of domestic standards and cooperation with government on export control compliance.
■ Export Control Cooperation
In accordance with Japan’s Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology, JADI actively supports government-led export control efforts, facilitating appropriate and responsible defense equipment transfers as part of Japan’s international security cooperation framework.
